Musical Theatre Fundraising Calendar 2009

As you may have heard (It's been in the BEN & I mentioned it at our AGM) Jan O'Brien from Horwich is organising a glossy Musical Theatre Fundraising Calendar on behalf of Christie's Hospital & the Willow Foundation (which arranges special days out for seriously ill young folk)--much like the Calendar Girls but with costumes!!!

NRAOS features as Misses, Mrs and Messrs January.

Contact David Butcher for order forms for the calender priced £7.00 each.

Rehearsals to Start

On September 1st, the Rosemere team will be gathering at Deane United Reformed Church to kick off rehearsals for their 2009 production. Since this is the 100th production of the Society, they have decided to have another go at the show which was their maiden effort in 1927! The ever popular "Trial by Jury"/"HMS Pinafore" double bill will be the subject of their efforts for the for the following months until the show hits the Albert Halls stage on the 17th March running to the 21st. The auditions have thrown up a strong cast, and they and the chorus are sure to enjoy the marvelous Sullivan arrangements which include such "Pinafore" hits as "We sail the ocean blue"; "I am the Captain of the Pinafore" and "Sir Joseph's barge is seen."

As for "Trial" well, thats just one feast of singing from the opening bars to the final chord. No doubt there will be time for a chat when when the hall doors open at 7.15 but MD Elaine Lowe will be keen to start wielding her baton at 7.45 and after a warm welcome to friends old and new another season of fun and musical fulfillment will begin. Elaine will be again supported by another Rosemere "old boy", Brian Smith, who will be working with the principals on the run up to Christmas.

Recruitment Drive

The New Rosemere committee are determined to work harder than ever on the urgent matter of recruitment. Even with an attractive Ladies chorus such as Rosemere's, Gentlemen (unlike Barkis) seem to be reluctant to have a go. There have been a few encouraging results over recent years but there is always the need to keep the production lines rolling.

All men (young and less young) who enjoy a sing can have a marvelous time in good company at Rosemere while they develop their singing talents. The ability to read music (although helpful) is by no means essential - many long term Rosemerians have managed perfectly well without this talent. Good training and a sympathetic ear come to new recruits as part of the package!

Charity Corner
On 28th June thanks to the genorosity of Tom and Ev Pickering a most enjoyable barbeque was held at their home. As well as the ritual over-eating of a splendid spread (special thanks here to Ev) with some sophisticated wine tasting (you must be joking-Ed) a most entertaing evening was had by all.

A nominal "price per head" was charged for the event and Rosemere's Committeee agreed to top this up to a substantial £200 which will be donated to charity.

This is an addition to the £100 already raised in support of the BATS Charity Calendar reported elsewhere on this site.

Interestingly, the programme for Rosemere's 1948 production of Edward Germans opera "Merrie England" gives details of the charitable donations made by the society up to that date- a creditable figure of Two thousand two hundred pounds, six shillings and and sixpence! The first donation in 1927 having been made to Bolton Lads Club in the sum of £20, a large sum in those days.

In 2004 our recently retired Chairman, Bob Whitelaw, calculated that that at today's values, Rosemere's Total Donations to Charity exceed £200,000 --- so we are now approaching a quarter of a million pounds !! Not bad for a group of music lovers!!

New Chairman & committee appointed

At the AGM on June 2nd 2008 New Rosemere appointed their new committee for the next 12 months.

"The full committee for 2008/9 is

Liz Tatlock ( Chairman)

Alison Rogers ( Hon Sec)

Bryan Mort (HonTreasurer)

Ed Barrow

David Butcher

Gill Clough

Eleanor Molloy

Gill Tonge

Bob Whitelaw

Claire Woods"

Taking the lead as Chairman is Liz Tatlock, a long serving member of the society who first appeared on stage with NRAOS as one of eight "children of the chorus" in their 1983 production of "Yeomen of the Guard". Since then she has developed into one of Rosemere's very best singers and, even more importantly, has encouraged own daughterand neice) to follow in her footsteps and appear as junior members of the Chorus (NRAOS's 2009 show will be their third!

At the AGM Liz thanked outgoing Chaiman Bob Whitelaw for all his hard work during his seven years as Chaiman for the last and said "I am honoured and privileged to have been elected to stand as Chairman of New Rosemere Amateur Operatic Society. I must thank all the members for the faith you have put in me. In accepting this office, I do so in the knowledge that I have the support of an outstanding committee who have served this society, and will continue to do so, with dedication and commitment. I can only promise to do my best and for all decisions made to be for the good of the society, to ensure we continue to build on the last few years and remain the premier society in Bolton."
